Perfume is not only a finishing touch to your personal style, but also a powerful tool to create memories. Unfortunately, many commercial perfumes contain synthetic chemicals that can not only irritate the skin, but can also be harmful to your overall health. Fortunately, you can make your own perfume, a not only creative, but also healthier choice. In this blog post, you will learn not only how to create your own unique scent, but also why this is a much healthier option than using conventional, chemical-laden perfumes.
Why Making Your Own Perfume Is Healthier:
- Avoiding Harmful Chemicals:
Many commercial perfumes contain synthetic chemicals such as phthalates and parabens, which have been linked to allergies, hormone disruption and other health problems. Homemade perfumes with natural ingredients avoid these potentially harmful chemicals.
- Customizable Ingredients:
When making your own perfume, you have complete control over the ingredients. You can choose high-quality essential oils and carrier oils with no additives, allowing you to experience the purest form of fragrance.
- Individual Sensitivity:
Everyone has different skin and individual sensitivities to certain substances. Homemade perfumes allow you to select ingredients that suit your skin type and sensitivity, reducing your risk of allergic reactions.
- Environmental friendliness:
Making your own perfume also helps reduce your impact on the environment. By using natural and sustainable ingredients, you contribute to a more environmentally conscious approach to personal care.
STEP 1: Gather Your Supplies for a 50 ml bottle
- 30 ml of denatured alcohol or ethanol
- 15 ml carrier oil (e.g. jojoba oil)
- Essential oils (top, heart and base notes)
- Empty 50 ml perfume bottle
- Funnel
(If you wish to make other ratios, convert these yourself of course!)
⚠️ IMPORTANT: Note accurately the proportions of ingredients used. This recipe is crucial for future replication or modification of your homemade perfume. Recording the essential oils, carrier oils and alcohol ratios ensures consistency and gives you the flexibility to modify your fragrance as desired.
⚠️ IMPORTANT: At the bottom of this blog post you will find everything you need to make this project a success!
STEP 2: Choose Your Fragrance Notes
When creating perfume, understanding the different scent notes is essential. Here is an overview of frequent top notes, heart notes and base notes, along with clarification of the effects they have on your body.
1. Top notes
Top notes are the first scents you smell when you apply a perfume. They are fleeting and provide the first impression of the fragrance.
Bergamot - Uplifting, refreshing, anxiety relieving.
Lemon - Clear thinking, refreshing, energizing.
Lime - Refreshing, invigorating, concentration.
Grapefruit - Optimism, invigorating, refreshing.

Rosemary - Focus, invigorating, improves memory.

2. Heart Notes
Heart notes emerge once the top notes fade away. They are the main part of the fragrance and are often responsible for the character and personality of the fragrance.
Jasmine - Calming, promotes relaxation and good mood.
Rose - Soothing, promotes loving emotions, relaxes
Ylang-ylang - Relaxing, Self-confidence, sensual.

Base notes appear after the heart notes and form the deepest and longest lasting layer of the fragrance. They stabilize and anchor the fragrance, leaving a lasting impression.

Patchouli - Grounding, relaxing, stimulates sensuality.

STEP 3: Make the Essential Oil Blend
Use a glass bowl to mix the drops of essential oils according to the proportions below. This is your fragrance mix.
Proportions for Essential Oils:
- Top notes (15%): 7.5 ml (150 drops)
Choose 2-3 top notes, for example bergamot, lemon, mint.
So for 3 scents, 2.5 ml (50 drops) each.
- Heart notes (40%): 20 ml (400 drops).
Select 2-4 heart notes such as jasmine, rose, cinnamon.
So for 4 fragrances, 5 ml (100 drops) each.
- Base notes (25%): 12.5 ml (250 drops)
Choose 1-3 base notes such as vanilla, sandalwood, patchouli.
So for 3 fragrances, 4.17 ml (83 drops) each.
STEP 4: Add the Carrier Oil
Use the funnel to add 15 ml of carrier oil to the fragrance mix. Mix gently.
STEP 5: Add the Alcohol
Add 30 ml of denatured alcohol to the mixture. Mix again gently.
STEP 6: Maturing and Testing
During the process of making your own perfume, it is important to know that the true scent of your blend will only be fully expressed after the perfume has aged for some time. In the early stages, the scent of the essential oils, alcohol and carrier oils combined will not yet be fully representative of the final result.
The scents will gradually blend and develop during the aging period. During this time, the synergy between the different fragrance notes will take place, bringing out the full depth and complexity of the perfume scent.
So allow the mixture to mature for at least 48 hours. Then test the fragrance on paper strips and on a small piece of skin to check the reaction for very sensitive skins.
STEP 7: Adjust If Needed
Adjust the scent by adding more essential oil, carrier oil or alcohol, depending on your preference.
STEP 8: Save and Enjoy
Use the funnel to pour your homemade perfume into the empty bottle. Store in a cool, dark place.
